The second-largest offshore drilling contractor in the world, Seadrill, said Tuesday that a leak from a blown-out well at the Montara platform off Australia will require a second jack-up rig to fix and is still out of control.
The drilling contractor said a gas leak “at an adjacent well” forced PTTEPA to evacuate the platform as well as the West Atlas jack-up rig in place near the installation. The West Atlas was working for Thai oil company PTTEPA when the alarm sounded.
The cause of the leak on the Montara wellhead platform is still unknown.
Rig contractor, safety authority and oil company are attempting to “regain control of the well and limit the effects of the discharge”, a statement said.
“These efforts include making another Seadrill jack-up drilling rig, West Triton, available to PTTEPA to drill a relief well,” a statement from the Norway-based drilling contractor said.
When the leaking well is under control, Seadrill said it’s expert team will reboard the West Atlas to assess damage.
Seadrill issued the statement after confusion arose at the weekend, when a press release from The Australian Maritime Safety Authority referred to the blow-out's aftermath as the West Atlas oil spill
