Oil spill clean-up cost tops $5 million

Muddy waters... The oil rig West Atlas leaks gas and oil off the WA coast.

The disaster that is the West Atlas oil spill shows no signs of slowing, with clean-up costs hitting $5 million and rising.

Three previous attempts by the rig's operator PTTEP Australasia to plug the well has failed.

A fourth attempt will take place on Friday.

The Greens today said a Senate Estimates committee was told the ongoing oil leak was likely to result in a much larger bill, with untold costs and damages to related industries also a factor.
