Thunder Horse is the world’s largest floating platform
Aker Solutions has signed a contract with BP America Inc. to perform subsea construction activities at the operator's Atlantis and Thunder Horse fields in the Gulf of Mexico.
The Scope of work comprises planning and executing the installation of subsea hardware including manifolds, PLEMs (pipeline-end manifolds), jumpers, flying leads and related equipment. The work will be performed at water depths between 1600 meters and 2000 meters, and is scheduled to start in Q4, 2009. The project will be executed by Aker Solutions' state-of-the-art construction vessels, the BOA Sub C and BOA Deep C.
"This is an important project for Aker Solutions as it further strengthens our relationship with BP and our position within deepwater marine contracting," says Erik Wiik, president Subsea North America, Aker Solutions. "We are very pleased to be working together with BP on this project."
Thunder Horse is a key discoveries in Gulf of Mexico.. Designed to process 250,000 barrels of oil per day and 200 million cubic feet per day of natural gas, Thunder Horse is actually exceeding those goals. It is not only the largest producer in the Gulf, it is one of the largest deepwater producing asset in the world.
“First oil” at the world’s largest floating drilling and production platform came on June 14, 2008. Since then, Thunder Horse has steadily ramped up its production by bringing on new wells. In March 2009, Thunder Horse produced over 300 thousand barrels of oil equivalent (BOE) per day from just seven wells. Plans are in place to add two additional wells in 2009 to further develop the north end of the field.
