Norwegian oil company Statoil and drilling contractor Odfjell have agreed to develop new sub-sea technology together much like the energy company has with other large supplier contractors.
Improving oil recovery and remotely controlled fields are at the heart of the partnership.
The technology being discussed includes an automated measurer of the drilling process; gear to efficiently reuse drill slots and measure well casing and new casing material for deep wells.
A Statoil statement said it was the first deal of its kind with a drilling contractor.
