Det norske has drilled a dry hole in exploratory well 24/12-6 S on the Stirby prospect in the Viking Graben in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea. The primary target for the well was to determine petroleum in the Upper Jurassic (Draupne formation), and the secondary objecitve was to prove petroleum in the Middle Jurassic.
The well encountered the Draupne formation, which was thinner and poorer than expected, while the secondary target found about 328 feet (100 meters) of solid, cemented sandstone. The well is dry. Drilled by the Songa Delta semisub, the well reached a depth of 16,568 feet (5,050 meters) and terminated in Middle Jurassic rocks.
Det norske owns a 30% interest in the license; Wintershall owns a 20% interest; Marathon owns 12%; North Energy owns 11%; Bayerngas owns 10%; GDF SUEZ owns 10%; and Talisman owns 7%.
