Det norske has made a small discovery in exploratory well 6508/1-2 on the Skaugumsasen prospect in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea.

Drilled by the Aker Barents semisub, the well encountered a 59-foot (18-meter) gas column and a 75-foot (23-meter) oil column. Det norske says preliminary estimates of the discovery suggest recoverable volumes of 1 million standard cubic meters of oil equivalent. Additional studies are required to determine if the discovery is economically viable.

This is the first exploratory well drilled in License 48, which Det norske operates with a 65% interest. Partners in the license include Petoro (20%) and Skagen44 (15%).
