In the presence of key customers, DNV’s new office in Batam was opened recently. The office is staffed by seven employees and has a strong focus on maritime and offshore newbuildings and repairs.

“This is an exciting new chapter in DNV’s development here in the region,” says Helge Kjeøy, DNV Maritime’s regional manager in South East Asia. “Batam has been steadily growing as an important maritime and offshore repair and newbuilding centre. Its proximity to Singapore and the main shipping routes, coupled with the availability of qualified, low-cost manpower, shall ensure that its importance shall increase in the future.”

He continues, “Also, the decision by the Indonesian government to make Batam a free trade zone is attracting more players, the latest being Drydocks World which recently acquired the two main yards Labroy and Pan United. Such developments will serve to internationalise Batam and fuel more growth in the future.”

Commenting on current projects, Pawan Sahn says DNV Maritime has a large orderbook with 22 high spec offshore supply vessels contracted and many more in the pipeline. DNV Offshore Class is also working on numerous components and part modules for various offshore projects being built in Singapore.

Speaking on the side lines of the opening ceremony, Tom Chua, general manager of Batamec, said: “The new DNV office in Batam augers well for all parties as this will foster a closer relationship between the yards, owners and class… it will enable more practical dialogues and save time and money.” Batamec currently has 12 offshore vessels on order to DNV class.
