Polar Pioneer

Eni Norge (Eni) has received consent to carry out exploration drilling in the Barents Sea with the mobile facility Polar Pioneer.

The consent applies to drilling of exploration well 7120/12-5 which is part of production licence 489. The well is located approx. 80 kilometres northwest of Hammerfest.

The total drilling activity will last about 57 days in the event of a dry well and about 73 days if a geological sidetrack is drilled.

The plan is to start drilling in September/October 2010.

Polar Pioneer is a Sonat/Hitachi-designed, semi-submersible drilling facility, built in 1985.

The facility is operated by Transocean Offshore North Sea Ltd NUF. It has previously drilled production wells on Snøhvit and several exploration wells in the Barents Sea for Statoil, Hydro and Eni.
