Opus - CFU project

Produced water treatment and oil separation specialist, Opus, has recently completed a milestone project to supply its compact flotation technology for the offshore Brazil region.

Opus has completed the contract – worth around £1million – which was awarded by Houston-based J Ray McDermott Engineering, to supply a skid mounted Compact Flotation Unit (CFU), for treating produced water onboard the Maersk-owned Peregrino FPSO (Floating Production Storage and Offloading) vessel.

The work, which was Opus’ fourth major international CFU contract, saw the company – which has bases on Flotta, Orkney and in Guildford, Surrey – work to an extremely tight delivery schedule.

Nigel Weir, managing director of Opus, said he was extremely pleased the project has been such a success.

He said: “We made a commitment to our clients to achieve the delivery schedule and we succeeded.

“The project – to deliver a CFU system, complete with long lead items – provided unique challenges but, drawing on our expertise, our team carried out an exceptional job in completing the work on time.

“The project went very smoothly, facilitated by the excellent working relationship developed with the J Ray McDermott personnel.

“An increasing number of companies are recognising how well suited the Opus CFUs – which have been proven to be extremely robust in arduous weather – are for FPSOs, as the separation process is not affected by the rocking motions experienced onboard the vessels.

“It was particularly pleasing to see us further extend Opus’ international reach with this, our first CFU in the offshore Brazil region, and we will continue to look to enter new international markets throughout 2009 and beyond.”
