The Petroleum Safety Authority Norway (PSA) has initiated an investigation of a fatal accident which occurred on the Oseberg B installation in the North Sea on 7 May.
A person died after falling about 14 metres from scaffolding to the deck. This incident occurred around 09.00 in connection with the dismount of scaffolding on the installation.
The victim, who worked for a contractor company, suffered serious injuries and was flown to Haukeland University Hospital in Bergen by a search and rescue helicopter. He died soon afterwards.
Three people from the PSA will travel on the afternoon of 7 May to Oseberg B to investigate this serious incident.
The goals of the PSA investigation include identifying the sequence of events as well as the direct and underlying causes of the accident.
In addition to implementing an independent investigation, the PSA has been asked by the Norwegian police to assist their own inquiries.
The last time a fatal accident occurred in connection with petroleum operations on a fixed installation on the Norwegian continental shelf was on Gyda in 2002.
