American Pollution Control Corp. (AMPOL) has completed the demolition of an aged crude styrene tank after its collapse in Baton Rouge, La., announced President Kirk Headley.
AMPOL used a specialized crew of two supervisors and two technicians to manage and complete this project from the site’s preparation to its restoration. Demolition was completed in six phases: site preparation, dewatering, tank dismantling, solidification, tank cleaning and tank salvage operation.
AMPOL’s quick response and centralized containment after the tank’s collapse prevented a possible spill and further risk of injury from the collapsed materials. Fast attention to the collapsed tank helped to ensure the safety of the environment, employees and the client.
Throughout the process, 230 tons of limestone was cleared and 150 tons of fly ash was used to solidify approximately 50,000 gallons of poly-based sludge. A third party disposable contractor cut up the tank for scrap and discarded the remains in a salvage yard.
“This was the first time that AMPOL has responded to a request with these specifications, but that did not stop our crew from coming up with a comprehensive solution to complete the project professionally,” said Headley. “The safety of our community and environment is paramount and it is our job to contribute when projects like these arise.”
