Milano-based Norway explorer ENI has “a giant gas find” in Afrodite in the North Sea off Norway, according to local media reports that also say the oil company is being “tight-lipped” until revelations next month.
The Transocean Leader struck solidy into a gas formation, according to newspaper Finansavisen. Partner StatoilHydro (40 percent) said earlier today that ENI had been successful nearby at Marulk, too, and at a nearby prospect near the Fram field.
Afrodite reportedly lies in License 293 between the Kvitebjoern field and Fram. ENI did not answer our call for confirmation.
The Norwegian newspaper reported informed sources saying up to 19 billion cubic metres of gas were at hand, making it the “fifth biggest find in five years”.
North Sea player Idemitsu Petroleum has a 15 percent stake in the license.
