The Kazakh parliament is considering a bill that would allow for the nationalization of the shortest oilfield contracts but could affect the country’s dealings with the ENI-lead consortium developing the huge Kashagan oilfield in the Caspian Sea.
The new draft of an oil law will recoommend state action if “there has been a significant change in circumstances that affect the country's interests, and if no alteration is made to the terms of the deal”, Thomson Financial reported Thursday, citing the Italian newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore.
ENI is joined at Kashagan by Total, Shell, ExxonMobil, ConocoPhillips, Kazmunaigaz and Inpex in order of stakes held.
