Canada’s oil province Alberta is lining up C$2 billion in power lines to connect hundreds of wind turbines expected soon for the excellent terms offered developers.
The Alberta Electric System Operator said this week that $1.83 billion would be needed for a 240-kilovolt grid to connect 2,700 megawatts of wind energy seen installed in the south of the province over the next decade.
Three stages of grid expansion costing $750 million (1,200 MW), $800 million and $280 million are said to be needed. The first stage if grid expansion is seen as a vital initial step to secure the excellent terms offered project promoters and investors.
Regulators and politicians have yet to approve the grid growth.
According to a Fred Olsen Renewables source, Canada’s western province of Alberta now offers the fastest returns on investments for people putting up wind power.
