StatoilHydro has found gas and light oil at the Fulla prospect in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea, where some 19 million barrels of oil equivalent are said to be in place.
“What has been proven in this well has added to our optimism, and an appraisal well will help decide whether this is a commercial discovery,” license partner Det norske oljeselskapet’s Odd Ragnar Heum said in a statement.
Nevertheless, StatoilHydro at the end of January said its 16-million-barrel Curran discovery off western Norway was “not commercial” at near-$40-a-barrel oil.
Like well 30/11-7 at Fulla, Curran lies near infrastructure, in this case Heimdal.
An appraisal well is planned for the spring to decide the true size of the Fulla, the discovery well of which went down to 4,067 metres vertical depth.
