Strongbow Resources Inc. has started drilling Big Lake et al Compeer 5-29-33-2W4 in the Compeer area of eastern Alberta. The well will test the Viking and Bakken Formations for the presence of commercial oil. Ensign Rig 543 was on site Saturday May 26, 2012 and the well was spudded on Sunday.

A vertical well will be drilled first to evaluate both the Viking and the Bakken formations through coring and wireline well logs. Depending upon evaluation of the potential reservoirs, Strongbow plans to drill a subsequent horizontal leg to produce light oil from one of the two zones. The first core in the Viking was cut May 29, 2012.

The Viking Formation oil prospect is part of an emerging large oil resource play in Eastern and Central Alberta as well as in the Dodsland area of Saskatchewan. The deeper Bakken Formation is present in the Compeer area and appears to have characteristics similar to productive Bakken oil shale in Saskatchewan. The Viking Formation is the Compeer play and will be developed by up to four (4) horizontal wells per section per zone.
