U.K.-based Heritage Oil Ltd. has started drilling the Miran West-1 well in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq in the highly prospective Miran licence, where three reservoir structures are targeted in three months of "high-impact" drilling.

Chief exec Tony Buckingham maintains the Miran licence could contain billions of barrels of oil.

The Great Wall Drilling Co.'s GW Rig #10 will spud the Miran West-1and drill to between 2,500 and 3,000 metres targeting the three proven formations known from adjacent discoveries Shiranish, Kometan and Qamchuqua .

The Miran licence contains two large structures, Miran West and Miran East, that have been mapped from the 332 kilometres of excellent quality seismic data acquired by Heritage between April and June 2008.
