Barrow Offshore Wind Ltd (BOW) - owned by the Danish energy company DONG and UK-based Centrica - has today entered into a turnkey contract for the construction of an offshore wind farm in the East Irish Sea off Barrow-in-Furness. The turnkey contractor is a consortium comprising the en-gineering company KBR and the wind turbine manufacturer Vestas.
The Barrow Offshore Wind Farm comprises 30 Vestas V90 turbines and will have an installed ca-pacity of 90 MW capable of supplying about 75,000 households. Construction will commence in the late spring 2005. The wind farm is scheduled for completion by November 2005.
DONG, Centrica and Norwegian Statkraft jointly acquired BOW in 2003. Recent changes in Stat-kraft's Board of Directors have caused the company to temporarily halt major investment decisions. Against this background Statkraft has decided to sell its BOW shares to DONG and Centrica with an option to re-enter the project at a later point in time.
