Emerson Process Management has donated unlimited licenses of its reservoir management software to Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP). As a sign of its appreciation of this donation, UTP held an official ceremony for the handover of the donation at its campus, attended by representatives from both Emerson Process Management and UTP.

The partnership is part of Emerson’s commitment to supporting the next generation of geoscientists and will enable UTP students to utilise Emerson’s reservoir modelling software Roxar RMS™; reservoir engineering suite Roxar Tempest™; and oil and gas production management tool, METTE. The software – that will also come with Emerson support – will be deployed in UTP’s Geosciences and Petroleum Engineering Departments and the Centre of Excellence in Subsurface Seismic Imaging & Hydrocarbon Prediction. As part of the agreement, UTP has also committed to developing a number of technical papers.

“As a long-standing commercial partner of PETRONAS, we are delighted to be sharing our skills, expertise and software within UTP,” says Eirik Gudmundsen, Regional Director Asia Pacific at Emerson Process Management. “Emerson’s latest seismic to simulation solutions will give the geoscientists of tomorrow the tools they need to help operators make informed decisions and unlock the value of their assets – so crucial to the future of the oil and gas industry.”

His words were backed up by UTP Vice Chancellor, Datuk Ir (Dr) Abdul Rahim Hashim: “We pride ourselves on UTP’s close links with commercial and industry innovators, such as Emerson. Through access to Emerson’s software and support network, our students will enjoy hands-on experience of many of the challenges oil and gas operators face today and will be able to address crucial operator questions such as where to drill, what production strategies to adopt, and how to maximise oil and gas recovery from their assets.”

UTP is always committed to academic excellence in preparing its students to develop and thrive in their studies and ultimately, their careers. The university welcomes collaborations that will help the university community gain remarkable achievements in shaping its path and building its knowledge and experience for further advancement.

Roxar RMS helps operators accelerate the field development planning cycle by allowing multiple disciplines to work together on a common reservoir model in parallel. The software also facilitates big loop workflows of reservoir management that provide the greatest accuracy, the most comprehensive uncertainty assessment, and the best-quantified risk in the geologic model.

The Roxar Tempest reservoir engineering suite operates alongside Roxar RMS and is used in hundreds of installations worldwide. It consists of five modules: Tempest VIEW, the interface for all Tempest modules; Tempest ENABLE, a history matching tool; Tempest MORE, a modern, next generation reservoir simulator; Tempest PVTx, a fluid analysis tool; and Tempest VENTURE, an economic evaluation tool that provides cash flow analysis derived from simulation results.
