With UK Government working on a roadmap for the future development and strategic direction of the carbon capture and storage (CCS) sector, the Energy Institute (EI) announces its latest work in support of this developing technology.

While large scale deployment of CCS is anticipated to offer significant opportunities to reduce carbon emissions, it must be implemented in a secure manner ensuring that any plant in operation is safe for workers and the general public. In response to this, the EI has developed a training course to cover the capture, storage and transport aspects of the process, whilst assessing the technical and safety requirements along the chain. Participants will understand the characteristics of CO2, the challenges involved, and the lifecycle management of CO2 storage sites.

This training has been developed to support the technical work programme undertaken by the EI over the past four years. Working with the Health and Safety Executive (UK), the Carbon Capture and Storage Association and the Global Carbon Capture and Storage Institute, the EI offers a platform bringing relevant companies together to discuss issues surrounding the implementation of the associated technology with both a global and domestic outlook. Learning from stakeholder events, meetings and investigations, the EI has published guidance based on this combined industry knowledge and experience for the benefit of the future development of CCS. This has resulted in the following technical publications:

Reviewing the latest course material, Martin Maeso CEnv MEI, Technical Director, Energy Institute, said, ‘This is another great example of the EI’s support for those working in the energy industry. The EI is working to bring together industry expertise in the safe capture, storage and management of CO2 emissions. Through the provision of training to support continuous professional development, and the delivery of good practice guidance, the EI is working to ensure those in the energy industry have the appropriate skills and knowledge to help face the challenges that lie ahead.’
