The European Commission adopted a commitment decision in which it officially agrees to the initiatives that E.ON said it is prepared to carry out in order to end its ongoing disagreements with the EU-Commission on electricity-related issues. The Commission’s decision renders E.ON’s commitment to divest its ultrahigh-voltage transmission system in Germany and to sell about 4,800 megawatts of generating capacity legally binding.
In its decision, the EU-Commission explicitly highlighted the initiatives’ effective contribution to enhancing competition in Germany’s electricity market in a way that benefits electricity customers. Prior to making its decision, the EU-Commission conducted a market test this past summer in which it received positive feedback on the proposed initiatives from market participants and competitors across Europe.
E.ON can now begin the process of divesting the agreed-on generating capacity and ultrahigh-voltage transmission system within the prescribed time frame.
