ExxonMobil donates $5 million to Ike disaster relief

Exxon Mobil Corporation declared a donation of $5 million for disaster relief assistance in communities along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico resulting from Hurricane Ike.

“Hurricane Ike caused untold damage affecting millions of people, many of whom require the basic essentials – food, water and shelter,” said Rex W. Tillerson, chairman and chief executive officer. “It is our hope that this donation will provide some relief in affected areas.”

ExxonMobil’s donation is being directed to the American Red Cross, the United Way, the Salvation Army and the Texas Disaster Relief Fund, established by Gov. Rick Perry, and follows an earlier donation of $1.5 million for disaster relief assistance in Louisiana resulting from Hurricane Gustav.

“Our thoughts are with those affected by the storm, including about 25,000 ExxonMobil employees and their families across southern Texas and Louisiana,” said Tillerson. “Our focus now is on the recovery – helping our employees, their families and their communities as they deal with the aftermath of the storm and in planning for a safe resumption of our operations in the region, which are vital to the nation’s energy supply.”

One of the most affected areas, Houston, is home to ExxonMobil’s largest employee population of approximately 16,000 employees and 5,500 retirees. It is headquarters for six of ExxonMobil’s operating companies: ExxonMobil Chemical Company and all five Upstream companies, ExxonMobil Development, Exploration, Gas & Power Marketing, Production and Upstream Research companies. It is also home to ExxonMobil Global Services Company and ExxonMobil Pipeline Company.

In Baytown, TX, east of Houston, ExxonMobil’s Baytown Complex is one of the largest integrated and most technologically advanced petroleum and petrochemical complexes in the world. It includes a refinery, chemical plant, olefins plant, plastics plant, a technology and engineering complex and a research and engineering operation.

ExxonMobil operates a refinery, chemical plant and polyethylene plant in Beaumont, TX, and in Louisiana operates refineries in Chalmette, south of New Orleans, and a chemical plant, polyolefins plant, plastics plant, lubricants plant, pipelines and the Anchorage Chemical Terminal in Baton Rouge, which is recovering from damage caused by Hurricane Gustav.

The company has oil and gas production operations offshore Gulf of Mexico and in a number of onshore locations throughout Louisiana, most notably in Grand Isle.
