Maersk Oil - Affleck Field

Two operational managers from Maersk Oil UK will explain how industry can benefit from lessons learned by others during a seminar in Aberdeen tomorrow (25 August, 2011).

Speaking at a Subsea UK ‘Lunch and Learn’ session at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre (AECC), Alistair Cassels, head of subsea marine and structures and Ian MacKenzie, projects group manager, will give an account of the key findings from Maersk Oil’s Gryphon FPSO incident investigation. The oil and gas installation was shut down in February after sustaining damage during a heavy storm. The pair will then give an overview of the leading independent oil operator’s business activities in the North Sea.

Mr Mackenzie said: “The team on board the Gryphon installation acted both promptly and efficiently in shutting down the wells and stabilising the vessel. One of the issues we will be covering is the importance for organisations to have the correct practices and procedures in place to react to unforeseen events.

Mr Cassels continued: “Maersk Oil carried out a detailed investigation of the Gryphon FPSO incident and subsequently issued an industry safety alert. We are pleased to share these learnings with other companies as part of our commitment to improving the safety of all offshore operations.

Neil Gordon, chief executive of Subsea UK, added: “The issue of health and safety is one of paramount importance and today’s seminar is set to be thought-provoking.

“It is with great pleasure that I welcome both Mr Cassels and Mr MacKenzie to host this seminar and I look forward to hearing their future plans within the North Sea during what is certain to be a lively and interactive presentation.”

The seminar, which is free to attend for all Subsea UK members, will be held in the Crombie Suite at the AECC.
