Nettpartner AS has chosen Nexans Norway’s smart cable solutions for the Tellenes wind farm in Rogaland county. When completed in fall 2017, this will be Norway’s largest wind farm.

Consisting of 50 turbines, its anticipated annual production will be equivalent to the electricity needs of some 25,000 households. Even before the wind farm is completed, Google has signed a 12-year contract to purchase its output. Nexans’ cables will be carrying green power to the grid, allowing Google’s European data centre to run on renewable energy.

For use in the onshore wind power market and elsewhere, Nexans Norway has developed a new generation of smart cable solutions that integrate power, optical fibre and earthing cables into a single product. These combined cables offer contractors and developers considerable savings in installation costs. Since the power, optical fibre and earthing cables can be spooled out as one, cable laying is both easier and faster. Other benefits include smaller trenches, less blasting, less use of backfill, fewer drums and more manageable construction sites.

Nexans will be supplying Nettpartner AS and the Tellenes wind farm with around 120 km of Smart TSLF 36 kV cables of this type.

“Nettpartner chose Nexans in partnership with Stangeland Maskin, on the basis of an overall assessment, since the solution allows for simpler laying and needs less space. In addition, several work operations can be performed simultaneously, which will also save time during the cablelaying. Key for us was to optimize the delivery in terms of specified lengths and cross-sections. Nexans has been reassuringly on top of this as we’ve moved forward,” says Terje Bydahl, Senior Project Manager at Nettpartner AS.

The cables are to be delivered on 100 or so drums, with special lengths for each individual connection in the wind farm, which will save unnecessary costs on joints and sheaths. “We are committed to developing innovative, smart and cost-saving cable solutions for our customers. Winning this tender is a validation of our efforts and consolidates our strong position in the onshore windpower market in Norway,” says Bård Lillehaug, Head of Sales and Marketing at Nexans Norway.

The cables for the Tellenes wind farm will be supplied by Nexans Norway from the factory at Langhus.
