Produced water treatment and oil separation specialist, Opus, has recently completed a separator upgrade project on the Montrose platform – located in the UK sector of the North Sea – for Talisman Energy (UK).

The contract – worth around £200,000 – involved Opus, which has bases on Flotta, Orkney, and in Guildford, undertaking the process design for the separators as well as designing and supplying new internals for the installation’s first stage separator and dehydrator vessel.

Secured in May, the project required Opus to improve performance and operability of the separators at future flow conditions whilst working to an extremely tight schedule to meet the platform’s shutdown date, in August.

Opus’ Managing Director, Nigel Weir, commented on the completion of the contract: “This was an exciting project for us because of the technical requirements, which involved a very fast track delivery schedule, with minimum time permitted for offshore installation.

“The work involved unique challenges – for example, the conversion of the existing dehydrator into a conventional separator required a novel internals configuration, with existing oil/water nozzles being re-employed with a series of internal collection manifolds – but through the skill and expertise of our team, we delivered the project on time and within budget.”

“In recent years we have enhanced the performance of our clients’ production facilities with both new build and upgrade applications numbering in excess of 60 separation and produced water systems.

“With this experience we are extremely well placed to reliably complete such specialised work, particularly within tight deadlines, and achieve results for our clients.”
