The Aberdeen section of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) has been awarded the SPE President’s Award for Section Excellence for the second consecutive year, beating off competition from other sections worldwide.

The SPE President’s Award for Section Excellence recognises exceptional merit across a number of areas including efforts in member programmes, technology dissemination and cooperation with other SPE sections.

As a volunteer organisation, SPE Aberdeen works closely with the oil and gas industry, Scottish universities and local schools, institutes and academia to advance the learning and technical excellence in all aspects of the industry; offshore, onshore and internationally.

Out-going SPE Aberdeen chairman for 2010-11 Chris Nussbaum said: “This award from the international community of SPE recognises that Aberdeen is really setting a global benchmark. The competition from around the world for this recognition is fierce, so for Aberdeen to win the President’s Award for Section Excellence is a huge achievement and is something to be extremely proud of.

“Winning this award two years in succession goes to show what an excellent team of volunteers and support staff we have. Every individual involved is extremely passionate about our work and take great pride in what they do.

“It has been a privilege to be SPE Aberdeen chairman for the past year and I wish everyone involved with SPE in Aberdeen the best of luck taking the section forward.”

The award comes as the Aberdeen section prepares for the official launch of its 2011-12 session with an evening event on Wednesday 31st August at Aberdeen’s Douglas Hotel. The event, which begins at 5pm, will see all of SPE Aberdeen’s committees being represented, and the section is encouraging new and existing members to attend and learn how they can be involved over the next year.

Newly appointed SPE Aberdeen Chairman Masud Javaid said: “Winning this award for the second year running gives us an excellent platform in which to start our 2012 session on a high. We aim to continue to raise the profile of SPE Aberdeen in the local energy community and highlight the excellent technical programmes that we offer.

“We look forward to welcoming new and existing SPE members to our event on the 31st August.”

SPE Aberdeen is run entirely by volunteers, and has members from across the range of age, gender and nationality and four student chapters at five Universities in Scotland.
