A special session of the Alaskan State Legislature ended last week with a 25 percent oil tax on energy companies set to haul in $1 billion for the public treasury.
State Gov. Sarah Palin has sought out the tax and forced the 30-day special session to bring it about, the Anchorage Daily News reported at the weekend.
Oil companies had long voiced their view that the new tax would affect their investment thinking in the remote and sparsely populated province with a history of oil-related accidents.
