A scan of the Barents Sea seabed in the Norwegian Arctic has been completed for oil-company backers using “pin-prick” electromagnetic equipment, survey outfit EMGS has reported.

The electromagnetic data will serve Norway’s upcoming Round 20 of exploration license awards with 30 blocks and 9,000 square kilometres scanned.. “The EM data will give potential bidders a competitive advantage during the licensing round, and will help them to target their exploration resources more effectively,” EMGS chief executive Terje Eidesmo said in a statement.

His company was touting a new 3D EM offering for “good, early indications of hydrocarbons and prospectivity”.

However, Barents Sea access could be limited in Round 20, to the oil industry’s displeasure. Oil companies have nominated 129 exploration blocks in the arctic areas between the Norwegian Sea and the Russian border.

According to the industry’s umbrella advocacy, the Norwegian Oil Industry Association, or OLF, just 30 blocks are available in the Barents.
