Chinese Cosco Shipyard Group has signed a letter of intent with Norway-based Sevan Marine to build Sevan 650 drilling units, the so-called “round rigs”.

The move means Sevan is excercising two options which came with earlier rig-building orders, and options for six more Sevan platforms are newly secured. No dollar amount was disclosed for the rigs, which are said to be cheaper to build than other semi-submersibles for the shipbuilding methods used building their circular hulls.

Sevan has already paid $7 million to secure the steel for the two rigs to be fabricated at COSCO Nantong Shipyard. The yard is building a first Sevan 650 rig ordered in March 2007.

The 65 rigs boast space for 10,000 feet of riser pipe plus their own oil storage for up to 150,000 barrels of oil.

The rigs are expected to work for ONGC and Petrobras.
