An offshore-duty Sikorsky helicopter has crashed into the North Atlantic off Eastern Canada, and only one of 18 passengers has been rescued, the Canadian Press has reported.
The rescued man is in stable but critical condition.
Scandoil.com failed to contact Cougar Helicopters, the company operating the flight to a cluster of offshore rigs. Unlike a recent successful helicopter ditch in the North Sea, the Cougar helicopter reportedly sank upside down in ice-cold water after deploying escape equipment.
Cougar employs 150 people, including 65 pilots in all North America’s offshore oil towns. The company had only just acquired three new S-92 aircraft at about $25 million each, according to Helicopters Magazine.
