The operating company of a tanker carrying liquefied petroleum gas and seized by pirates in the Gulf of Aden yesteday has said pirates are preventing communication with the ship, but they have made no demands and crew appear to be safe.

Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement confirmed wire reports by issuing a statement that the MT Longchamp registered in the Bahamas and managed from Germany has been boarded by seven pirates who now hold 13 crew -- 12 from the Phillipines and one Indonesian.

The pirates seized the vessel early on Thursday, and a brief communication revealed the ship was now enroute to Somalia, the pirate base.
