Statoil has received permission from provincial authorities in Alberta, Canada to start the North American Oil Sands Corp.'s Leismer demo project.

Statoil's wholly owned NAOSC aims to produce from 22 horizontal well pairs linked to four well "pads". A processing facility will generate steam which is injected under ground to make the heavy oil less viscous.

NAOSC owns operates 1,110 square kilometres of oil sands leases located in the heavy-oil rich Athabasca region north-east of Edmonton. Statoil paid $2 million for NAOSC early in 2007.
