StatoilHydro has proven another five billion cubic metres of gas and an underlying thin oil layer for the Alve field in the Norwegian Sea, the Norwegian oil company said Thursday.
The find lies 16 kilometres south of the world’s most northerly placed floating production storage and offloading ship, the Norne FPSO.
The discovery well is due to come onstream in January 2009 and to become the first producer at the Alve field.
Well 6507/3-5S has been completed, and the well will be temporarily plugged.
While the extra gas will be piped to the Norne field, no plan has been aired for producing the oil.
The well was drilled to a vertical depth of 3,834 metres below sea level, and was completed in lower Jurassic rocks. The water depth is 368 metres. The Ocean Vanguard drilling rig is leaving the location to drill an exploration well for StatoilHydro on the Irish continental shelf.
Operator StatoilHydro is joined on the block by DONG Energy of Denmark with a 15-percent interest.
