StatoilHydro makes gas discovery

West Alpha

Norwegian energy champion StatoilHydro has discovered a natural gas field in the Norwegian Sea about five kilometres from the producing Åsgard field.

Well 6507/11-9 appears to have uncovered 1.5 billion standard cubic metres of recoverable gas, according to Norwegian sources. Drilling had probed rock of the mid-Jurassic era.

License 263 managers are already talking tie-back to Åsgard’s Midgard satellite field.

The West Alpha drill rig bored down to 3,000 metres below the sea, which is about 300 m deep in the block. Germany’s BayernGas Norge, with 30 percent, joins StatoilHydro in the license
