StatoilHydro has discovered gas at the Galtvort prospect in the Norwegian Sea just nine kilometres from the producing Draugen field, partner Noreco has trumpeted.
Wildcat well 6407/8-4 A in License 348 is still be drilled into rock of the Lower Jurassic era. In May 2008, discovery well 6407/8-4 S proved gas at the same level in the southern segment of the Galtvort prospect.
The size of the discovery is estimated at up to three billion cubic metres of recoverable gas.
The two Galtvort wells are the first to be drilled in the license. There are now three discovery wells on the license (Galtvort two, Tau one) with the Gygrid prospect due to be drilled early in 2009.
The West Alpha drill rig drilled the well to a vertical depth of 2,000 metres below the seabed 266 metres.
