StatoilHydro and partners have struck oil in the North Sea near the Fram oilfield and historic Troll gas field, it was announced Monday.

Well 35/11-B-23-H was testing mid-Jurassic-era rocks at the C-Oest prospect when it proved mostly oil — up to 38 million barrels of oil equivalent. The well will be produced at the nearby Fram field.

The Bideford Dolphin found the exploration target and will continue drilling at Fram.

Operator StatoilHydro is partnered at the well with Gaz de France (15 percent), Idemitsu (15 percent) and Mobil with 25 percent.
