The largest exporter of protected seed potatoes from the UK, IPM Ltd, delivered a 5,000 tonne consignment to Aberdeen Harbour today, ready for the 3,500-mile journey to Egypt.
Ireland-headquartered company, Irish Potato Marketing Ltd (IPM), delivered the cargo to Aberdeen where it was stored in the large modern transit sheds on Clipper Quay before onward shipment to Egypt’s Abu Qir port.
A further 2,400 tonnes are scheduled for delivery and departure to Morocco’s main port, Casablanca, later this month. The harbour has already handled a 4,300 tonne cargo for IPM, which was shipped to Egypt in November.
The welcome new traffic is being handled by logistics specialist Sea-Cargo, appointed by IPM to ensure the safe storage and loading of the cargo.
Aberdeen Harbour’s excellent reputation, first class facilities and international trade links were a deciding factor for IPM when choosing to work with the port and the operation’s success is likely to see the company become a more regular customer.
Aberdeen Harbour Board’s chief executive, Colin Parker said: “The size of this shipment has given Aberdeen Harbour the opportunity to prove, once again, its ability to handle freight from a wide range of industry sectors. We are enthusiastic about working with Sea-Cargo and IPM to ensure the safe and efficient passage of similar consignments over the coming months and years. This activity confirms our reputation as a world class port and further strengthens our international links, which is good news for both Aberdeen Harbour and the wider North-east region.”
Sandy McGowan, production manager of IPM in Scotland, said: “Our first introduction to Aberdeen Harbour occurred earlier this year while undertaking a fact-finding mission to see the range of logistical services it could provide.
“From a geographical perspective, the port is closer to our grower suppliers who are based from Fife to the Black Isle, encompassing the North-East and Morayshire. Aberdeen Harbour was a rational choice in terms of time and financial motivations. We are happy with the manner in which the cargo has been handled and look forward to building on this going forward.”
Ian Shewan, general manager of Sea Cargo Aberdeen Ltd, said: “IPM is a well-established company that was looking for a comprehensive logistics service to improve the efficiency of its deliveries and reduce costs. Together with Aberdeen Harbour we have been able to offer a suitable solution and we have experienced an all-round positive response from all involved. We look forward to shaping a strong future for IPM through the port.”
