Trelleborg has marked the start of work on its new Brazil facility with a sod-cutting ceremony at the site in Macaé.

The new facility, due to open towards the end of 2011, will manufacture Trelleborg Offshore's complete product portfolio, which includes a wide range of polymer-based solutions for offshore topside and subsea oil and gas exploration.

Alan Wilson, president of Trelleborg Offshore, commented, "Major oil and gas discoveries have been made off the coast of Brazil in recent years, as a consequence of which, we are experiencing increasing demand for our high-performance polymer and syntactic foam-based buoyancy and cable protection solutions from the region.

"We are committed to opening a new manufacturing facility close to our customer base so that our local team is on-hand to provide the technical support that our customers have come to know and expect from the Trelleborg brand."

The coastal city of Macaé, located approximately 180 kilometers north of Rio de Janeiro, is known as Brazil's oil capital as it is where all major project-engineering companies for the sector are located.
