Through extensive testing at its in-house facility in Singapore, Trelleborg’s engineered products operation continues to supply quality solutions to many of the largest floatover projects across the globe, guaranteeing continued assurance and performance throughout installation.

It is this commitment that recently saw Trelleborg secure a contract for the supply of floatover equipment for a major offshore oilfield development project located in the UAE.

JP Chia, Engineering Manager within the engineered products operation of Trelleborg Offshore & Construction, says, “The contract spans the project’s second of three engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) packages, which comprises the installation of an accommodation platform, a gas treatment platform and a separation platform. With three offshore platforms and a broad range of solutions from our oil and gas portfolio required, this is one of the largest scale projects that we have undertaken to date.”

As part of this package, Trelleborg recently fabricated and delivered 22 sway fenders, engineered to withstand up to 320 metric tons, and six surge fenders, engineered to bear 75 tons per unit, for use across each of the three platforms.

Additionally, Trelleborg delivered tongue grout seals and Boat Landing Systems, which comprise shear fenders, compression fenders and rubstrips. Developed using a specially formulated elastomeric compound and with a displacement capacity of 1600 mm, the shear bearings used within the Boat Landing Systems are the largest ever produced globally.

Trelleborg’s floatover fenders are used to limit the motion of a topside transport barge within the confines of a jacket slot during the floatover mating operation. This reduces the transport barge's impact loads on the jacket legs. Each fender and component was designed, fabricated and tested at Trelleborg’s Singapore facility, as the huge dynamic loads that needed to be accounted for at the installation site could only be replicated using its state-of-the-art test press machine, which has a load capacity of 18,300 metric tons and weighs in at 600 tons itself.

Traditionally mounted onto the leg can, the tongue grout seals delivered to the project are custom designed and are secured directly onto a pile. Trelleborg’s tongue grout seals close the gap between the jacket and the pile so that grout can be inserted to ensure a solid and stable connection during jacket installation process.

Trelleborg’s Boat Landing Systems are used to absorb the kinetic energy of a berthing vessel, thus preventing damage to the vessel and the platform jacket during the production phase.

In 2017, Trelleborg will also supply the project with 22 Leg Mating Units (LMUs).
