Competition among supermajor oil companies bidding on contracts to develop Iraq’s eight big oilfields has reportedly produced a winning bid from an Anglo-Chinese consortium of BP and CNPC.
The “prize” for the Brits presiding over Basra and its lion’s share of oilfields is BP’s contract to build up Rumaila and produce its 7 billion barrels of oil, FT.com has reported.
The BP share price was up a third of a percent on the unconfirmed news, even though project talks over Rumaila had gone on for over a year.
Meanwhile, four bids were made for the four-billion-barrel Zubair oilfield — from BP, Russian-Indian pairing ONGC-Gazprom; Italy's ENI and an Exxon Mobil consortium, according to FT.com
Kirkuk reportedly got a bid from Shell, although it’s not known how the Kurdistan Regional Government will react to oil deals imposed from Baghdad. Each reported hike in oil exports from Iraq has produced a storm of violence and protest in Kurdistan.
