Calgary-based oil companies Talisman Energy and Questerre Energy aim to drill two horizontal wells later this year to test the Utica shale in the St. Lawrence Lowlands of Canada's French-speaking "oil province Quebec.

Utica is "believed to ahve the right propterties" for shale development, said Questerre chief exec Michael Binnion. He said having an experienced oil company like Talisman study the site was "invaluable".

The wells will lead to "multi-stage fracs to prove up the commerciality".

Talisman drilleed and tested four wells and now stands to earn a 75-percent stake in the 720,000-acre play.

Testing of the Utica shale in the fourth well, St. Edouard #1, is underway with results expected in early August.
