The deepest-drilling drill ship in the world is now working for Chevron in the Gulf of Mexico with technology that “surpasses the limits of previous” drill kit, it was understood Friday.

Transocean’s Discoverer Clear Leader is the first of two drill ships to be commissioned to Chevron’s specs and will work now under a five-year job for the oil company.

The ship can drill to 12.2 kilometres total depth from atop 3,650 metres of water. The vessel marks a clear trend in the industry’s costly, “space-age” high tech toward finding oil and gas in deep water.
