Brazil-based Norskan Offshore and DOF Subsea Servicos Brazil have secured $670 million in financing from Brazil's national development bank BNDES for their three new-build ship projects at Brazilian yards.

The governmental Merchant Marine Fund said okay to financing three ships for Norway-based Solstad Offshore and DOF ASA’s 50/50 business Norskan. The ships will be built at Aker Promar, now, presumably, STX Promar.

Money was also allotted to upgrade three ships: Skandi Salvadore (hull 22), Skandi Vitoria (hull 23) and unnamed No. 24.

The lending is understood to represent 80 percent of the costs in question, and the Norwegians are banking vessel day rates will produce returns more buoyant than interest rates when the ships enter service.

Brazil’s oil windfall awaits the production of ships and their deployment to rigs finding the country’s deepwater hydrocarbons.
