Gas has been discovered in the first exploration well on the Galtvort prospect in Norway, although operator StatoilHydro and partners have yet to disclose the size of the find.

Gaz de France (30 percent), E.ON Ruhrgas (17 percent) and Noreco (17 percent) are major interest holders. Endeavour Energy and state entity Petoro own seven percent each.

A sidetrack well is now planned early 2009 at the Gygrid prospect in the same license, partner Noreco disclosed.

Well 6407/8-4 S in License 348, a wildcat, proved gas in Jurassic-era sandstone just north and northwest of the Njord and Draugen fields in the Norwegian Sea. The distances will allow for satellite developments.

A sidestep well will be drilled in the north of Galtvort when the discovery well is completed. Galtvort was the first exploration well in the license.
